Investing in our planet
As we approach Earth Day 2022, let’s take a minute to remind ourselves what we are all working so hard to save. The air we breathe, the water we drink, the land we farm, the food we eat.
The theme for Earth Day this year is Invest in our Planet. The premise is that individuals, corporations and government can work together and create a future that is both prosperous and sustainable, and that there is still time to reverse the effects of climate change. Earthday.org has lots of great ideas for activities. You can plan a community clean-up, plant trees or a field of wildflowers for pollinators. Your activity doesn’t need to be on a large scale, either. You can start “investing in our planet” right at home simply by evaluating your waste basket.
In our house, I’m always fishing recyclables out of the garbage can, or nagging about unnecessary or excessive use of plastic freezer bags or paper towels. OK OK. It’s annoying, but let’s think about the big picture, shall we? The goal is to make someone think every time they reach for these items. “Can I use a dishcloth or towel to clean up the mess instead of paper towel?” “Can I use a sealable container to store my sandwich or fruit instead of a plastic bag?”
Changing things globally starts with changing things locally. We are all responsible for our little corners of this beautiful Earth. And although at times it may seem impossible to reverse the effects of climate change, it isn’t. It starts with a single action – something as simple as washing out the peanut butter jar and placing it in the recycle bin.
As a side note, April is also Home Show Month. Yes, home shows are back for the first time since the COVID-19 pandemic two years ago.! For our part, we are planning to attend the Atlantic Heavy Equipment Show (April 13 and 14), the Saint John Home Show (April 22-24) and the Fredericton Home Show (April 29-May 1). If you’re planning to attend any of these shows, please be sure to drop by our booth. We would love to see you, and we will have some swag to give away.
Happy Earth Day everyone!
