Earth Day 2023

Invest in our future by investing in the planet

We did it. We made it through the winter months and have officially welcomed spring. The month of April means we can look forward to warmer temperatures, budding trees and the return of flowers.

April also happens to be the month when one of the largest civic observances in the world happens. Did you know that more than 1 billion people participate in Earth Day activities each year? It started in the United States in 1970 as a national campaign to raise awareness about the deteriorating environment and now involves more than 190 countries.

The theme of Earth Day this year is Invest in our Planet, which highlights the importance of dedicating time, resources and energy to reversing the effects of climate change. By investing in environmental initiatives and sustainable practices, we are helping to protect our beautiful planet. It’s important to remember, however, that investing isn’t only about contributing money to a cause. There are lots of ways you can invest in our planet this year without spending a dime:

  • Plant a tree, or better yet, plant six!
  • Plant a garden with native species to support butterflies, bees and other pollinators.
  • Participate in a community spring cleanup. There are lots of New Brunswick municipalities and organizations holding roadside, river or shore cleanups. These not only help protect our precious eco-systems, but they also help beautify our neighbourhoods in preparation for the spring and summer months.
  • Make a pledge to reduce your plastic consumption and choose eco-friendly alternatives.

Those are just a few suggestions. For more information about what you can do in honour of Earth Day 2023, visit www.earthday.org. Happy spring everyone!
