Celebrating pumpkins, tires and all things Circular

October is Circular Economy Month

It is officially October – the month of all things pumpkin. It is also the month to think about changing the tires on your vehicle to the winter versions, and to remind you that if your all-seasons have no more seasons left, return them to any garage or business that sells tires. The tires are collected and taken to TRACC in Minto, where they are recycled into new products.

Speaking of recycling products into new ones, October also just so happens to be Circular Economy Month in Canada. Led by the Circular Innovation Council, Circular Economy Month is an opportunity to educate Canadians about the concept of designing products to be reused or reinvested into new products, as opposed to single-use items such as plastic straws or bags.

Circular Economy Month was officially launched last year as an expansion of Waste Reduction Week, which has been around since 2001. It traditionally takes place the third week of October (October 16-20 this year), and its intent is to educate Canadians about environmental issues, as well as promote and celebrate efforts to impact climate change. The initiative was expanded last year to advance the concept and practice of a circular economy. There are different themes each week, and different themes every day during Waste Reduction Week. You can become involved by organizing an event and helping to spread the word. To find out more, visit https://wrwcanada.com/en.

In honour of Circular Economy Month, as well as Recycle NB’s 15th anniversary, we have decided to hold a contest on our social media channels. We are giving away a winter jacket, a toque and a few other things to help you get through the winter months. All you have to do to enter is comment or share a photo of your favourite fall drive, fall décor, Halloween costume – anything that has an October – or circular - theme. At the end of the month, we will draw for the prize package. Watch for posts on our Facebook and Instagram pages.
