Waste Reduction Week
Fredericton- October 15-21 is Waste Reduction Week in Canada and Recycle NB is encouraging New Brunswickers to make recycling a part of their regular routine.
“As the sponsor of Waste Reduction Week in New Brunswick, we hope that everyone will use this week to think about how they can reduce, reuse and recycle,” says Recycle NB Chair Murray Driscoll. “We want every week to be waste reduction week in New Brunswick.”
Driscoll points to the recycling of old tires as one way to help protect the environment and says it is easy to do in New Brunswick. “Just drop off waste tires at any tire retailer in the province and they will be recycled into new rubber products at the Tire Recycling Atlantic Canada plant in Minto.”
New Brunswick has had a waste management program for tires for over 16 years. The program protects the environment by diverting waste tires from landfills and turning them into recycled rubber products. Since it began, the program has diverted 1 million tires per year from the province’s landfills.
Along with tires, Recycle NB also manages the recycling of waste paint in the province. The paint management program has been in place for two years and, according to CEO Pat McCarthy, it has more than exceeded expectations. During its first 2 years of operation, 86 % of the paint collected was turned into new paint products. McCarthy credits New Brunswickers with the success of the program. “Our programs are a success because people across the province make an effort to recycle their old tires and paint. We hope that they will continue to reduce, re-use and recycle.” McCarthy says his organization receives calls from the public asking about the recycling of electronics and Recycle NB is looking forward to putting a waste management plan in place for these products in the near future.
