Recycle NB names winner of Tire Pressure Clinic Draw
Fredericton-During Waste Reduction Week in October, Recycle NB and Canadian Tire teamed up to offer tire clinics at Canadian Tire Stores across the Province. Donna Kelly, Miramichi, took part in the clinic at the Canadian Tire Store in Miramichi and was the lucky winner of the draw for four winter tires.
Recycle NB Chair Murray Driscoll thanked Kelly for participating in the program. “It only takes a minute to check your vehicle’s tires but proper tire pressure and maintenance help reduce global warming. We welcome Ms. Kelly’s effort to protect our environment. We hope all New Brunswickers will follow her example and check their vehicle’s tires regularly.”
The Rubber Association of Canada estimates that Canadians waste about 643 million litres of fuel each year due to improperly inflated tires. The result is that one million tonnes of carbon dioxide, a harmful greenhouse gas, are released into the atmosphere.
Proper tire care is one way to protect the environment but Recycle NB CEO Pat McCarthy says recycling old tires is another. “New Brunswick has had a waste management program for tires for over 16 years. The program protects the environment by diverting waste tires from landfills and turning them into recycled rubber products.” The program has diverted 1 million tires per year from the province’s landfills.
McCarthy says it is easy to recycle waste tires in New Brunswick. “Just drop them off at any tire retailer in the province and they will be recycled.”
